EDINBURGH — An off-duty Edinburgh police officer accidentally shot a woman Wednesday evening while cleaning a handgun, according to police.

Edinburgh Police Department officers and emergency personnel were called to the 400 block of Prosser Drive on the report of an accidental shooting, EPD Chief Doyne Little Jr. said in a press release. When they arrived, they found a 33-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The woman was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in stable condition, Little Jr. said.

Investigators determined an off-duty officer, with three years of service, didn't realize there was a live round in the chamber when he was cleaning his personal handgun, Little Jr. said.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident, Little Jr. said.
