SOUTHPORT — Officers escorted the son of fallen Southport Police Department Lt. Aaron Allan on his first day of second grade Thursday.
Lt. Allan was shot and killed hours after walking Aaron Jr. to the bus on his first day of kindergarten in 2017.
Since then, police officers and family members escort Aaron Jr. on the first day of school each year.

In 2018, Stacy Allan, Aaron's wife, started "First Day Hero" to honor her husband by making sure children know they are loved and they matter.
