INDIANAPOLIS — One person is dead following a house fire on Monday evening on the city's east side.

According to information from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, firefighters and officers were called to the house in the 500 block of North Temple Avenue around 8:20 p.m. Monday.

Police said one person died as a result of the fire.

Battalion Chief Rita Reith with the Indianapolis Fire Department said there were several small fires reported inside the house on both the first and second floor.

Reith said the initial callers to 911 reported hearing a loud boom, possibly a furnace, and saw a man running out of the structure with his clothes on fire. The man has not been located. The person who died was found inside the structure, Reith said.

The man who died has been identified as Kevin Galo, 21, by the Marion County Coroner's Office.

Homicide investigators from IMPD are handling the death investigation, which is standard procedure with any fatality related to a fire, Reith said. Fire investigators are also continuing to investigate the fire.

Reith said the home appears to be under renovation.
