INDIANAPOLIS — Parents who have lost their driver's license because of child support payments are getting a second chance from the Marion County Prosecutor's Office this month.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced the "Good Faith Initiative" program on Monday. The program will allow them to work with parents who owe back support and set up an affordable payment plan so they can get their license reinstated.
"What we want to do is reach out to those individuals, their families and really make an effort and an offer to them and say you come and talk to us about what you're able to pay we're not saying you have to wipe out everything that you owe," Mears said. "What we are saying is you come in and have an honest conversation about what you're able to pay and we're going to work with you to get your driver's license back and so moving forward you can make good on that child support obligation."
Right now, the state automatically takes your license away once you fall $2,000 behind in payments. Right now, there are more than 11,000 people in Marion County who have lost their license because of child support payments, and Meas is hoping they will step up and make the right decisions to get themselves back on track.
"We think it's counter-intuitive. Why are we suspending people's license when that's the biggest reason that people can't work," said Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears. "Ultimately the goal is that people pay child support. and so we're going to be super aggressive in getting people their license back so they can get back in the workforce and pay their child support."
