INDIANAPOLIS — People facing suspended driver's licenses are signing up to pay their child support.
About 135 people in Marion County want to set up payment plans to drive legally again.
WRTV first told you about this initiative by the "Good Faith Campaign" in December, in which 105 people signed up. It was recently reinstated, again, in early August.
Rafael Sanchez asked Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears if he was surprised to see dozens of people coming forward to say, "yes, I owe you money." In short, no, Mears was not surprised. He was encouraged.
"Well, I think it speaks to people who are willing to take advantage of resources when you offer, and when you offer opportunities to innocent people to improve themselves or put them in a better position," Prosecutor Mears said.
"I found that people are very willing to accept those challenges and those opportunities, and that's what we've seen with this program. And to me, it's just an encouraging sign that there are so many people who want to do the right thing, who want to be involved in their kids' lives, who want to make good on their financial obligation but are being held back for a number of different reasons. Therefore in a position to reduce those barriers, we're going to do that, because again, we're trying to help people."
