INDIANAPOLIS — The Pike Township Fire Department has decided to end their dive team operations after the department says they reviewed the risks and rewards of the team.

The dive team was tasked with recovering people underwater, according to a Facebook post by the department.

Trained rescuers and water rescue suits will remain on all engines and ladders and will be able to rescue people on top of the water, according to the post.

In 2018, the dive team was only sent to 24 of the more than 12,00 emergency runs, according to the post. Of the 24 incidents the dive team responded to, divers only dove four times — three of those times were to attach a cable to a vehicle underwater and once to recover a drowning victim in a multi-day, multi-agency response.
