Man charged with OWI after crash with son

Posted

One man is in custody after he crashed into a utility pole with his 14-year-old son while under the influence, police say.

On Friday, a member of the Johnson County Sheriff's Department was dispatched to a truck crash near the intersection of Saddle Club Road and Stones Crossing Road.

The officer approached the driver outside his truck, later identified as Thomas Hofmeister. When talking with Hofmeister, he noticed slurred speech and unbalanced movement. When asking for his identification, Hofmeister seemed confused about what he wanted, police said.

The officer noticed that Thomas' son had several cuts and was bleeding.

While medics treated Hofmeister's son -- whose name was not released due to him being a minor -- the officer tested Hofmeister's sobriety.

Police say Hofmeister failed all six tests. He did pass the portable breath test at .00 percent.

Hofmeister was arrested and taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital for a blood draw. While at the hospital, Hofmeister admitted that he had been taking two muscle relaxers and an anti-depressant, police said.

He was preliminarily charged with operating while intoxicated and operating while intoxicated - endangerment.
