GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A man has been charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend's current boyfriend, Johnson County prosecutors announced Monday.
Detectives say Evan Avart had been stalking the victim, Andrew Perry, by following him, staking out his home and peering into windows.
Perry had filed two police reports for harassment against Avart.
Deputies were initially called to the house in the 2900 block of Cadogan Drive on Dec. 2 when Perry's mother found him in the hallway lying in a pool of blood.
Perry's girlfriend left the house at 6:45 a.m. for work, and was unable to contact him all day. According to court documents, the girlfriend said she was involved with Avart and Perry at the same time, and it was causing tension between the two men.
On Dec. 16, detectives say Avart admitted to entering the house without permission and killing Perry. Avart said he wanted to talk with Perry about his relationship with his girlfriend.
According to court documents, Avart said he and Perry were arguing when Avart tripped and Perry moved toward him. Avart said he pulled a gun from his pocket and shot Perry in the head because he thought Perry would hurt him.
Perry died from blunt force trauma to the head.
