BAINBRIDGE, Ind. — The community in Bainbridge is mourning the loss of the former fire chief who was killed in a crash Friday afternoon.
Mike Smith served as the chief of the Bainbridge Fire Department for 15 years before he retired in 2011. Before he was chief, Smith served on the department.
"He was one of a kind. He was always there for me when I came up,” Bainbridge Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Nesbitt said. “He was very motivated.”

Community members and firefighters say they will remember Smith as someone who was dedicated to helping people and to the fire department.
Smith was killed in a crash in Hendricks County when he was head on-on by a vehicle traveling the other direction. The driver of the other vehicle, 18-year-old Kaylee Tuttle, died Sunday from a result of her injuries.
Funeral arrangements for Smith have not been released yet.
