GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Parents in Greencastle are pushing to get their children's school bus stop moved after three children were killed at a similar bus stop in Fulton County the day before Halloween.
The North Putnam Community Schools bus picks up children who live in the Van Bibber Lake Estates off of County Road 450 North.
Carol Haney says she's been fighting to get her grandchildren's bus stop moved off of the county road, which is similar to the one where three siblings were killed while crossing to board their school bus late last month, but her attempts have been unsuccessful.
"I don't want to see any of the children in this community hurt or killed," said Haney. "I'm up there every morning and I don't think I could stand that."
The North Putnam Schools superintendent says the school resource officer did evaluate the bus stop. She says they look at a number of things when deciding where their buses should pick up children, including:
- line of sight
- posted speed limits
- whether children cross the road or not
- accessibility for a turnaround
- re-entry to a road
For this particular bus stop, she says children do not have to cross the road, the speed limit is reduced to 35 miles per hour and the area is flat which allows for high visibility by both the driver and other travelers.
The superintendent also says that their bus drivers receive annual safety training and are provided with ongoing safety training and updates.
Each driver uses a hand signal when indicating to students whether it is safe or not to cross the road.
