INDIANAPOLIS — Everyone involved says it's long overdue. A project spanning many miles and four years should improve traffic flow in Hamilton County.

Monday marked the groundbreaking for the State Road 37 project. It will turn several Fishers intersections into roundabout interchanges, similar to Keystone Avenue in Carmel.

County leaders say some benefits are apparent, like improved north and south traffic flow. But there are other ways this will impact the way people move and live around Fishers.

"You're going to be able to ride a bicycle across 37," Mark Heirbrandt, Hamilton County Commissioner, said. "Where, right now, it's so dangerous, you know, it's nearly impossible to get across with a bicycle or anything like that, or walking or running through this. You're going to be able to have that access."

Construction begins at 126th Street and S.R. 37 this month. Crews will tackle the 146th interchange next spring. And 131st and 135th Streets are next fall. Construction on 141st Street happens spring of 2021.

Everything will wrap up roughly by 2022.
