INDIANAPOLIS — Police are investigating a crash that left a Decatur Central High School teacher injured on Indy's southwest side Monday morning.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 5200 block of Kentucky Avenue near Decatur Central High School around 7:55 a.m. for a possible fatal accident.

When they arrived, officers located a semi that appeared to have struck a blue pickup truck. The two vehicles were found to have stopped on the high school's property, within the green space.

The driver and sole occupant of the pickup truck was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Decatur Central High School said the driver that was injured was one of their teachers.

They shared the following statement:
"We are deeply saddened to share that one of our own, a Decatur Central High School Teacher, was involved in an accident this morning on Kentucky Avenue, and has been transported for medical treatment. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the teacher, as well as family and the medical staff treating the teacher at this time.

Out of respect for the family, who are still being notified, we are unable to share the teacher’s name at this moment. Thank you for your understanding. Recognizing that the accident was very visible to students and staff at the main entrance of DCHS, we have coordinated extra counseling support through Square 1 Therapy to be available for the students and staff at DCHS throughout the day.

We appreciate and are thankful for the support of our first responders, including IMPD, the Decatur Township Fire Department, and Decatur Township School Police."

According to the school, teacher Aiden Cross Elmquist is known to students as Mr. Cross. He is an English and Global Studies teacher, who is known for his dedication and support for students, as well as high energy and school spirit.

The driver of the semi was transported to the hospital for a blood draw, which is standard procedure during a possible fatal accident.

At this time, it is believed that the semi attempted to stop at a red light, but was unable to do so, ultimately striking the pickup truck who had a green light.
