SHELBYVILLE, Ind. -- Plans are in the works in Shelbyville to turn a former Marsh supermarket building into a preschool to address a growing need in the district.

The empty building that sits off State Road 44 was purchased by the Shelbyville Central School District.

Superintendent David Adams says there’s currently a waiting list for the preschools that are offered at elementary schools across the district, and because of that, many kids are coming to kindergarten already behind their classmates.

“The demand has been very high,” said Adams. “It’s one of the reasons why we looked at it. A lot of our kids come to kindergarten – they are one, two, three years behind. We are interested in getting out in front to offer preschool to more kids in our community.”

Adams says the renovation will cost $15 million.

The district sold bonds and will use that money to renovate the building.

Construction is expected to begin soon and be completed in time for the start of the 2019-20 school year.
