SHELBYVILLE, Ind. -- A month after a shooting at Noblesville West Middle School, Shelbyville schools had a lot to consider during their active shooter drill, and school officials say several changes are still being made to keep their students safe.

The drill, conducted at Shelbyville High School on Wednesday, was the largest-scale training exercise the school system has ever put on.

The Shelbyville Police Department, Shelbyville Fire Department, Emergency Management and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office were all part of Wednesday’s drill, which utilized actual students and teachers to make it as realistic as possible

Andy Hensley, Shelbyville Central Schools’ safety specialist, says there were points that it felt “too real.”

“It’s pretty sobering when you’re listening on the radio and hear ‘kids down, kids down - kids being shot.’ It kind of makes the hair stand up on your arms a little bit,” Hensley said.

The point of the drill was so that safety officials and the school could assess their response and equipment before a situation arises.

It included testing the security measures already in place, ensuring the school’s cameras are working, and making sure all entrances are able to be secured.

“We also have panic buttons that we’ve put into place,” Hensley said. “Kind of like a bank teller where you hit that button.”

Shelbyville school officials say Wednesday’s training showed them things they want to improve, like how police are able to get inside the school when all doors are locked during a lockdown, figuring out where to send parents to wait for their child and where they can be united.
