SHELBYVILLE — The head coach of the boy's varsity basketball team at Shelbyville High School abruptly resigned Tuesday.

Ryan Mack was also the assistant athletic director at the school and had coached the Golden Bears for eight years.

According to School Superintendent Mary Harper, Mack's resignation was accepted by the school board Tuesday evening.

In his resignation, Mack said he was leaving for "personal reasons." But his departure comes in the middle of the school year and in the middle of the basketball season. In fact, Mack resigned on the same day his team traveled to Columbus East High School for a game.

Assistant Coach John Hartnett took over the team and won.
