SPEEDWAY — Speedway's trail system will receive a significant expansion thanks to a grant from the state.

The town announced in a release Friday that the Speedway Trails Association will receive $4.8 million from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Next Level Trails program to expand the B&O Trail from Speedway toward Downtown Indianapolis and Hendricks County.

“The state’s visionary trail system shows a B&O Trail from the White River to the Wabash River," Bev Katterhenry, vice-president of the Speedway Trails Association, said.

"And we agree that this link connecting the Town of Speedway to the Cultural Trail in Downtown Indianapolis to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is worthy of celebration as we kick off the Next Level Trails Grant Program.”

The new trail will extend the existing west side trail east to Michigan Street and west towards Girls School Road, including a bridge over Eagle Creek. The bridge will connect residential and commercial districts in Speedway and Indianapolis.
