CUMBERLAND — A 14-year-old boy was the one who pulled the trigger and killed a customer Monday evening during a robbery outside a Dollar General in Cumberland, police believe.
The suspect, identified only as E.C., was arrested on suspicion of murder and armed robbery for his role in the incident in the 12000 block of E. Washington Street.
According to a preliminary probable cause document, Corporal Michael Crooke II was watching the Dollar General Monday night when the robbery happened. Crooke reported seeing Gregory Raley, 37, walk up to the store doors. He then saw another man, later identified as Steven Sheppard, walk Raley back toward the vehicle. Raley had his hands up "in a pleading gesture."
The officer then saw E.C. come out of the business and extend his arm in Raley's direction. Crooke then heard a single gunshot.
Police set up a perimeter, and soon caught Sheppard. The arresting officer also noticed a suspicious vehicle nearby, and believed it could be connected to the robbery.
Inside the vehicle were two men and E.C., who was found with a .38 caliber handgun, cash and rolls of coins.
