INDIANAPOLIS -- The workers of a west side plant went on strike Wednesday afternoon, after union members rejected a 3-year contract offered by the company.
The members voted 63-2 to reject the offer, according to a release.
Sumco's final offer included a 3.26 percent wage increase in the first year and a 1.74 percent increase in the second and third years. A sticking point between the company and the union is the rate of increase in pay for new hires. The union wants new hires to be able to reach a higher pay scale in four years' time.
"We don't see this ending anytime soon," Bill Horton, a striking worker, said. "We're in it for the long haul. We don't agree with the contract they offered and we just want to bring attention that we need a fair contract."
Sumco produces electroplates to automotive and electrical industries.
