INDIANAPOLIS – Students gained real world experience Thursday while giving back to the community through a program called TeenWorks.
More than 400 high school students joined TeenWorks this summer where they work five days a week to earn money and gain life and career skills.
As part of the program, the students helped construct picnic tables on the University of Indianapolis campus, but many of them say the project was more than manual labor.
"We work on resume writing, teambuilding activities, leadership activities. At the end of the summer they get to participate in mock interviews,” said Rick Cassidy, TeenWorks supervisor.
The summer program provides transportation, daily meals and aside from different work projects, TeenWorks helps students apply for college.
"This is my chance to not sit around all summer and get into something new and get a job, learning new job experiences,” said Tyazsha Ridner.
