LAFAYETTE — An 11-year-old girl drowned Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Creek Park in Tippecanoe County, according to the sheriff's office.
A diver from the Tippecanoe County Water Response Team found the girl below the water after she was last seen in the water with her 13-year-old brother, Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office Lt. Matthew Couch said in a press release. Neither of them was wearing a flotation device.
The 13-year-old boy was able to get out of the water on his own before emergency personnel arrived, Couch said.
Emergency personnel were called to the park just before 5 p.m. to investigate the incident, Couch said. The family searched for the girl for about an hour before a third-party caller called emergency personnel to help translate information for the family.
An unmanned aerial vehicle wasn't used in the search because initial reports indicated the girl was last seen on land, Couch said.
The girl's identity and additional information have not been released.
