TIPTON COUNTY — If you drive U.S. 31 between Indianapolis and Kokomo or points beyond, you're probably familiar with the railroad crossing outside Tipton.
It's an active Norfolk Southern rail line and it crosses a very busy four lane highway.
But it won't be like that forever. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is planning to build a bridge over the tracks and County Road 100 South, which runs along side the rails.
INDOT says the bridge is needed to improve traffic flow on U.S. 31 and reduce vehicle collisions. And it will eliminate the long waits for the long trains to pass. Federal and state funds will pay for the project.
The state will hold a public hearing on the plan this Wednesday, July 29, 6 p.m. at the C.W. Mount Community Center and Banquet Facility, 341 West Jefferson Street, Tipton.
The environmental documentation and preliminary design information are available to view at this link: https://www.in.gov/indot/2704.htm [lnks.gd] and the Tipton County Public Library, 127 East Madison Street, Tipton.
