BLOOMINGTON — Two probationary Bloomington firefighters have been fired and one was suspended after they were allegedly involved in a battery incident in July.
After an event celebrating the fire department's recruits on July 12, three probationary firefighters were allegedly involved in an incident where a man was battered near downtown Bloomington, Bloomington Police Department Capt. Ryan Pedigo said.
The victim had red marks on their neck and top of their head, blood on their lips and mouth, and a bump on their head, according to a BPD media case log.
The Bloomington Board of Public Safety terminated Dennis Todd and William Garrison for unbecoming of an officer, Bloomington Fire Department Chief Jason Moore said in an email. Kody Waggoner was suspended by the board for 48 hours without pay.
“We expect our firefighters to act in a manner that aligns with our core values both on and off duty," Moore said. "The actions of these few do not reflect who we are as a department. We are committed to providing the best service to our community with dedicated professionals.”
Todd was awarded the top recruit for the 2019-01 class during the celebration, according to a Facebook post from the department.
