SPEEDWAY — The Speedway Town Press, a weekly newspaper that's been reporting on news and events in Speedway and the Indianapolis west side for years, has printed its last edition.
The Press specialized in news that generally wasn't available elsewhere—school events, local clubs and organizations were its bread and butter, with plenty of photos.
In its final edition, Publisher Shirley Nelson lamented changes in how people get their news. "It is clear that The Press, along with so many other newspapers and print outlets, are quickly fading to irrelevance. That is due mostly to the rise in social media, which is now, for good bad, where most people turn to for news," she wrote. "Falling circulation leads to less revenue, which leads to budget cuts for papers, and most, like the The Press, just don’t have the revenue base to go on-line."
Nelson also cited family considerations in making the decision to shut down the paper.
"It’s been a good era with a lot of ups and downs and we wish Speedway residents only the best as we make this bittersweet change in our lives," she wrote.
