WESTFIELD — The City of Westfield broke ground Monday on a $35 million project that will soon be the centerpiece of the city's downtown.
Grand Junction Plaza, a six-acre park, will feature green space, trails, an amphitheater, and an ice-skating rink.
The plaza has been a concept city leaders have been planning for ten years now, according to Westfield Mayor Andy Cook.
"This is truly a remarkable day for the city of Westfield," Cook said. "We have worked long and hard to develop what we know will be a wonderful amenity for our residents now and for generations to come."
A volunteer citizens group, Grand Junction Task Group, was part of the master plan to redesign this area of the city, with organizing the concept development and design.
"Every city needs a heart, and this community has risen to the challenge and envisioned one that will set us apart," Teresa Skelton, Grand Junction Task Group member, said. "This will be like no other space, and we are excited to see this dream become a reality."
The Grand Junction Plaza project will be of no cost for residential property taxpayers through Westfield's funding plans, according to the city.
The city said they see economic developments in Westfield already, including Old Town Properties announcing a $25 million investment into a mixed-use project in the downtown area.
The plaza is set to open in 2021.
