INDIANAPOLIS — A 71-year-old woman is dead after a collision between her vehicle and an Indianapolis Firetruck on Sunday morning.

IFD was called to a residential fire on the southeast of Indianapolis around 10:44 a.m. when the collision happened while the engine was en route. The crash occurred at the intersection of Shelby Street and Southern Avenue, according to IFD public information officer Rita Reith.

According to Reith, the woman's vehicle hit the top of the firetruck's windshield and then slid 100 feet away from the engine due to the impact of the collision. The victim was driving a Silver 2002 Jeep Liberty.

The victim was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where she did a blood draw that had a .000 result. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

"The engine sustained significant damage to the front and side, with equipment ripped from its holders and windshield glass strewn throughout the interior," Reith stated in a release.

Reith says four firefighters were in the engine at the time of the incident, one of which was slightly injured with cuts to the face from the windshield.

This is the second time in two days that an IFD firetruck has collided while en route to an incident. On Saturday, an IFD truck also collided with another vehicle at Fall Creek Parkway and Delaware Street.
