Yes, those are stop signs for pedestrians on the Monon Trail

WESTFIELD, Ind -- A recent controversy has Westfield Police offering clarification on what you should do when you approach intersections if you're walking, running or biking on the Monon Trail.

You'd think there would be no confusion. There are signs for pedestrians and bikers that say "Stop Ahead" and farther ahead is an actual stop sign.

But there is evidence of bicycles blowing through the intersection without stopping. Hamilton County resident Steve Litton has noticed.

"You'll see bikers that don't stop," he said. "Pedestrians don't stop. Apparently they don't read the stop sign."

Apparently Westfield Police noticed, and wanted to clarify what the rules are by posting a video on its Facebook page.

The video has been up for about a year, but Captain Charles Hollowell thinks it is an important enough issue to go over again.

"The vehicle does have the right-of-way and the pedestrian will have to stop," Hollowell said. "There's a reason the stop sign is facing for the pedestrian. The stop signs are put there because we want people to be safe. We don't want people to be hit by a vehicle."

Westfield Police say there have been no accidents or injuries at the Monon Trail intersections so far this year, so most people seem to be following the rules.
