INDIANAPOLIS — If all goes as planned, you won't have to leave the downtown Indianapolis area to play some golf, starting in 2022.
A new golf driving range and entertainment venue is planned on 11 acres along the west bank of the White River at West Morris Street, close to Lucas Oil Stadium on the southwest edge of downtown, an area known as Stadium Village.
Named FlyingTee, it will be similar to TopGolf, next to Interstate-69 in Fishers.
MWA Master Builders, Prince Alexander Architecture and Indy Golf Party LLC are teaming up to build the $28 million facility. The land is under contract.
If this old industrial area seems an odd fit for a multi-level driving range, restaurant, bar and conference rooms, Steve Alexander of Prince Alexander sees opportunity. "It's really close to Lilly's technology complex on Morris and Harding Streets, with about 7,000 scientists working there," said Alexander.
The hope, of course, is that the Indianapolis convention business is able to rebound from the current lack of business due to the pandemic. When it does, FlyingTee is close enough to the Indiana Convention Center and downtown hotels to be a draw for visitors looking for some golf, along with food and drink.
"Even if the convention business took two or three years to really come back in full strength, we think there is enough already established demand generators and consumer," said Alexander.
The location is close to Interstates 65 and 70, making it convenient for those living south and west of downtown.
Alexander is among those working on a master redevelopment plan for the area where FlyingTee will locate. In early-November, development experts will gather to suggest what the future may hold for Stadium Village.
