Kurt Busch, a NASCAR champion, has been accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend.
The assault is alleged to have occurred during a Sept. 26 race at Dover International Speedway, The Associated Press reports. Patricia Driscoll, 36, said Busch, 36, struck her head against a wall several times.
The Dover Police Department confirmed that the allegations were brought to police Wednesday and an investigation is underway.
Brett Jewkes, NASCAR's senior vice president, released a statement Friday:
"We recognize the seriousness of this matter and are actively gathering information from all parties including law enforcement authorities and Stewart-Haas Racing," he said.
Busch, the 2004 NASCAR champion, comes from a family of racers. His brother, Kyle Busch, is also a NASCAR driver.
