WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Capitol Police officer who was on duty during Wednesday’s riots in Washington, D.C. and died over the weekend attended Purdue University.
Howard Liebengood died by suicide Saturday, said a Washington-based attorney speaking behalf on his family.
The attorney confirmed Liebengood attended Purdue, though it’s unclear when.
“His death is a tragedy that has deprived all of us a dedicated public servant,” the statement reads. “His family has suffered a devastating loss and asks that they be given space to grieve in private.”
Liebengood is the second Capitol Police death in the last week. Officer Brian Sicknick was injured in the riot and later died at a hospital.
Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., released the following statement:
I am deeply saddened by the death of Capitol Police Officer Howie Liebengood. He was a Purdue University graduate, an avid auto racing & Indy 500 fan, and a friend to all who knew him. My deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and colleagues.
