LONDON, England – Queen Elizabeth II is moving to Windsor Castle as the new coronavirus continues to spread in the United Kingdom and across the world.
The royal family announced the move on Tuesday, calling it a sensible precaution. The 93-year-old will move to the castle in the outskirts of London on Thursday, one week earlier than planned and will stay there beyond the Easter period.
The royals also announced a number of other changes made for “practical reasons in the current circumstances.”
Those changes include the cancellation or postponement of a number of upcoming public events with large crowds of people that the queen and other royals were scheduled to attend.
The family says further announcements on Trooping the Colour, the 75th anniversary of VE Day and the state visit by the emperor and empress of Japan will be made in due course, in consultation with the U.K. government.
Being in her 90s, the queen is at a higher risk of getting sick from COVID-19, the illness associated with the virus.
