UPDATE: Internet service was restored Monday night, CNN reports.
North Korea’s access to the Internet was down Monday in an apparent cyberattack.
It’s unknown if this outage is a cyber-counterattack by the United States.
The New York Times reports the outage is consistent with a “denial of service attack,” in which Internet servers are flooded with traffic until they shut down. Dyn Research, an Internet monitoring firm, reported that North Korea’s internet access was “down hard.”

President Barack Obama said the U.S. would launch a “proportional response” after North Korean hackers stopped the release of Sony’s comedy “The Interview.”
The hackers leaked sensitive information about Sony employees and threatened cinemas that would show the movie, which is about assassinating North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
