INDIANAPOLIS — A group of Indianapolis City-County Councilors have called for the full prosecution of the owner of a dog that died after freezing to the floor of her own doghouse.

Employees with the Indianapolis Animal Care Services found Wednesday a dog that had been frozen to death and malnourished in the 2400 block of E. 10th Street. The dog, 10-year-old Remy, had been thrown in the dumpster by her owner.

The dog, had spent its final days and nights freezing to the ground of her doghouse.

Gordon Turentine, 62, was charged with animal cruelty in connection to the incident. He told police he had Remy for about 10 years.

Councilors Zach Adamson, Danielle Coulter, Susie Cordi, Colleen Fanning, Blake Johnson and Frank Mascari said in a news release that they want to see the Turentine prosecuted “to the fullest extent of the law.”

“It’s heartbreaking to think of the way this animal suffered,” Adamson said. “None of our neighbors, human or animal, should have to face these kind of weather conditions without appropriate shelter.”

Adamson sponsored the updated Care and Treatment law in 2015, which states that animals must be brought inside when the temperature outside is below 20 degrees or above 90.
