BLOOMINGTON – Indiana University is supporting a lawsuit against the U.S. government that challenges new guidelines that could take away international students’ visas this fall.
The lawsuit was filed Wednesday by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It seeks a restraining order against the new policy on the visa status of international students enrolled at U.S. universities for the fall 2020 semester,
The policy states that international students would need to take in-person classes this fall or leave the country, preventing them from taking online classes.
“IU commends the action taken by Harvard and MIT against this cruel and ill-judged order and joins them in strongly urging the federal government to rescind it," IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. "Like many leading colleges and universities, IU is committed to doing all that we can to help reopen our nation. We are working to balance delivering the high-quality educational experience that our students want and deserve with protecting the health and safety of all of those we serve.”
IU plans to return next month with both in-person and online instruction. IU enrolled more than 7,700 international students last fall.
