INDIANAPOLIS — Of all the people who oppose a potential convenience store in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood, Ty Tarr has a particularly personal reason.
The proposed store will be at the intersection of 49th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, where Tarr’s business currently sits.
Ty’s Automotive is connected to a small Circle K and gas station. Circle K is not renewing his lease, and wants to use the space for a convenience store.
Tarr has been the owner of Ty’s Automotive for 45 years.
“My whole life has been there,” Tarr said at a public neighborhood meeting Monday morning. “I grew up in that building. From cleaning the bathrooms to where I am now. I've been there my whole life."
Many Meridian-Kessler residents oppose the convenience stores for fear of increased traffic or crime to the neighborhood.
"I think it's pretty clear that the neighborhood hasn't asked for it, doesn't want it, doesn't need it, and probably won't use it," said Jim Killen.
Many residents were concerned over alcohol sold at the location. Circle K has promised to not sell alcohol, but it is unknown how long that promise will continue.
Tarr’s lease expires at the end of August. He’s been looking for a new location for his business but hasn’t found one yet.
