INDIANAPOLIS — President Donald Trump awarded former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz the Presidential Medal of Freedom Thursday.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor and is awarded by the President to individuals who have made meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.
Holtz won the 1988 national title at Notre Dame and has been an outspoken supporter of Trump, speaking at the 2020 Republican National Convention.
The White House said he was recognized for his accomplishments in football as well as his work as a philanthropist and author. He also served for seven years in the U.S. Army Reserves.
During the ceremony, Holtz said Trump was the greatest president of his lifetime.
Last month, Holtz said he had contracted COVID-19.
