INDIANAPOLIS — U.S. Sen. Todd Young of Indiana called President Donald Trump in May to “make the case” that former Alabama judge Roy Moore could not win a Senate seat, according to a report from the New York Times.
Moore is still deciding whether to challenge Doug Jones in Alabama. Moore lost to Jones in 2017 in a special election after he was accused of pursuing relationships with teenage girls while in his 30s, the newspaper said.
Young, R-Indiana, is the leader of the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. According to the New York Times, he called Trump to tell him Moore can’t win a Senate seat and he hopes the Republican party will oppose Moore running for Senate. The New York Times cited two Republican officials “familiar with the conversation.”
Young’s office did not comment.
The NYT story went on to say that Young made the call at the behest of Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell.
