MUNCIE — Emergency crews are investigating a single engine aircraft crash in Delaware County.

According to the Delaware County Airport Director Tim Baty, a small plane crashed just west of the airport in a wooded area near the Cardinal Greenway Trail around 10:24 a.m.

The plane made an initial attempt to land but missed the approach and went around to try again when the crash occurred just off the runway, Baty said. Only the pilot was on board at the time.

According to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, two people who were walking on the Cardinal Greenway Trail path were injured by the plane and suffered serious injuries.

The pilot was taken to IU Health Ball Memorial hospital, along with the two pedestrians.

The FAA and flights standards out of Indianapolis are on scene investigating to determine exactly what happened. No info has been released on who owned the plane.

According to Baty, employees from the nearby American Electric Power company building were doing work in the area and witnessed the crash. They quickly rendered aid and put out several small fires after the crash.
