BATESVILLE, Ind. — One person is dead after an early morning crash Tuesday on I-74 near Batesville, Indiana State Police said.

At approximately 4:30 a.m. investigators responded to reports of a crash in the westbound lanes of the highway. First responders originally reported that a person driving a tractor trailer had collided with a bridge support.

An initial investigation found that 55-year-old Osei K. Boateng was traveling westbound when his tractor trailer entered the median and hit the yellow barricades protecting the overpass. The vehicle, officials said, smashed through the barricades and collided with the bridge support.

Boateng was trapped inside the vehicle and pronounced dead by the Franklin County Coroner's Office.

Police diverted I-74 traffic to SR-46. The highway was closed for just over six hours while police investigated and crews worked to clean the road of debris.

Indiana State Police said the crash remains under investigation.
