INDIANAPOLIS — A man from Tennessee was killed in a fiery crash Saturday on Interstate 65 southbound in downtown Indianapolis after he crashed into the back of a semi-truck stopped in traffic.
The driver, Eduard Chekhun, 28, of Sevierville, Tennessee, was trapped in the car that caught fire "immediately," Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine said in a press release. Efforts by troopers and bystanders to help him were unsuccessful due to the damage of the vehicle and the intensity of the fire.
According to a preliminary investigation, Chekhun was traveling at a high rate of speed when he came upon the stopped traffic, Perrine said in a press release. He struck the back of a semi-tractor trailer stopped in traffic due to congest traffic ahead.
The driver of the semi-truck, who hasn't been identified, was not injured, Perrine said.
Investigators are waiting for test results to determine if alcohol played a role in the crash, Perrine said.
