LIBERTY — A Union County woman was shot and killed by police early Friday during a struggle in which she allegedly approached an officer with a knife.

The Union County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call shortly before 1 a.m. reporting a woman walking in the middle of U.S. 27 south of Liberty.

Liberty Police Department Officer Lorenzo Shepler responded and found 29-year-old Maggie A. Dickinson standing in the middle of the highway, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

"When Officer Shepler approached the woman and attempted to move her out of highway, the woman began to resist and a struggle ensued," the release said. "During the struggle the woman retrieved a knife and advanced towards the officer. Officer Shepler fired multiple rounds from his duty weapon striking the woman at least one time."

Dickinson later died after she was flown by medical hospital to Kettering Ohio Medical Center.

Shepler, a two-year veteran of the Liberty Police Department, sustained minor injuries and has been placed on administrative leave during an Indiana State Police investigation. The investigation's findings will be forwarded to the Union County Prosecutor.
