WHITELAND — A teen was shot and an adult was taken into custody following a police action shooting in Whiteland on Friday.

The shooting took place in the 700 block of harvest Meadow Way around 12:30 p.m.

Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox says the Whiteland and New Whiteland Police Departments were following up on an incident that happened overnight when they received a call from someone about a juvenile with a gun inside their home.

When police arrived, the juvenile came out and pointed a gun at officers. Two New Whiteland Police Department officers returned fire, striking the 17-year-old.

He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Cox said Saturday morning that the teen is "ok" after surgery.

An adult at the home was also taken into custody. It is unknown if he shot at police officers at this time.

The situation began the night before when police were in pursuit of a vehicle for an unknown reason. The two people inside the vehicle being pursued bailed at Tracy Road near US 31 and took off running, firing shots at officers.

No officers were hit.

Police say the two individuals involved in the police action shooting on Friday were the same two they were searching for in connection with the police chase and shots fired at officers from the night before.

The incident caused a bit of chaos in Whiteland on Friday, forcing Clark-Pleasant Schools to lock down several schools in the district as a precaution.

Clark-Pleasant Schools issued the following statement to parents Friday regarding the lockdown and clarifying that the incident did not involve anyone at the school.

"Whiteland Police locked down Whiteland Community High School in response to a police action shooting in the Country Gate neighborhood. Shortly thereafter we initiated a lockdown at Whiteland Elementary School, Break-O-Day Elementary, and Sawmill Woods Preschool. A lockdown is a strategy used to ensure that the exterior of the building is locked and activity is limited so that authorities can narrow the scope of the issue at hand.

Additionally, we have learned that police have a second individual in custody in the Pebble Creek neighborhood near US 31 and Worthsville Road. These individuals are believed to be known to the police and associated with the investigation and search that took place in New Whiteland last night.

Again, the suspects were not on school grounds or in any of our school buildings, and none of the police actions were on our grounds either. They occurred in the community.

These active police investigation scenes may inhibit some bus access to the before mentioned neighborhoods. Our transportation department and schools will communicate with the impacted families to arrange safe pick up. Student safety will remain the top priority above convenience.

We thank our local law enforcement professionals for their dedication and willingness to put their lives on the line to protect all of us!"
