GOSHEN — A woman who was about to get into a van was instead hit and killed by the vehicle.

It happened Wednesday morning in Goshen, Indiana. According to police, the 44-year-old victim was about to get into a transit van that would take her to ADEC, an organization that provides services for the disabled in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties.

Police say the van, which was driven by an ADEC employee, had gone to the woman's apartment complex to pick her up. But the vehicle's driver accidentally pressed the gas pedal rather than the brake.

The woman was hit and pinned under the van. Police say she died at the scene.

The victim was an ADEC client. The organization's president and CEO, Donna Belusar, released a statement later in the day to ABC 57 in South Bend:

“Our hearts were heavy to learn that an individual that we serve lost their life in a tragic vehicle accident this morning. Our prayers are with their loved ones, friends and extended family here at ADEC. We are cooperating with the officials who are currently investigating the incident."
