ALBION, Ind. (AP) - A 22-year-old African lion named Mufasa has died after spending the last seven years at a northeastern Indiana sanctuary.
The Black Pine Animal Sanctuary in Albion announced the lion was laid to rest Wednesday.
Mufasa previously lived at a roadside zoo near Monticello before the Indiana Department of Natural Resources ordered him moved to Black Pine in June 2011.
The sanctuary says Mufasa's health declined in recent months because of his advanced age and long-term medical issues, and he was refusing to eat. Black Pine says the average captive lifespan for a lion is about 15 years.
