INDIANAPOLIS – Four hundred fewer abortions were performed in Indiana in 2019 than the previous year, for the lowest yearly total since 2016.

There were 7,637 abortions performed in Indiana in 2019.

The state’s annual terminated pregnancy report was released last week, offering details on the abortions performed in the state.

About 56% of abortions in the state were surgical, including the dilation and evacuation procedure. That procedure was made illegal last year in a state bill. But the bill was blocked from becoming law by a federal judge as a result of an ACLU lawsuit.

The overwhelming majority of abortions, 99.47%, were performed when the woman was between zero and 13 weeks of gestation. Just 40 were performed after the 13-week mark.

Most of the 2019 abortions were performed on women who live in Indiana, but 618 were for women who traveled to the state for the procedure.
