INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Animal Care Services will hold an adoption event Saturday night in hopes of freeing up more kennel space.
The shelter will be open until 10 p.m. Saturday, and this will be the second time IACS has held a late night adopt-a-thon to allow more people to come adopt animals. IACS adopted out 101 animals in a single day at a similar event in November 2019.
"That is a huge number for us. Typically we do about 14 to 15 adoptions a day. Being able to do over 100 was amazing for us," Jessica Amick said.
Roxie Randall, who manages community outreach efforts for the shelter said adoptions are critical right now because when the weather gets cold, they see more animals come in and fill up the shelter.
"That means a lot of people have been seeing their neighbors dogs tied outside for too long," Randall said. "They will report those and if the weather is too terrible and the owners aren't willing to bring them inside we do have to confiscate those animals. Which we don't want to do. "
In an effort to encourage people to adopt, the cost to adopt an animal is $5 for the entire month of February.
