CARMEL — Major changes are planned for a popular downtown Carmel corner.
The southwest corner of 126th Street and Rangeline Road could look significantly different soon if plans to replace a shopping center with condominiums and two-story homes come to fruition.
Carmel city leaders said it is still early in the stages of development, and they plan to present official renderings to the city council for approval in the next few months.
Classic Kitchen & Granite has called the area home for more than 10 years.
"The physical location is great," Jennifer Ingram said. "The ease of parking is wonderful, and it's just a place where people stop in."
City leaders said they will work with the businesses when the time comes and they will give 12 months notice to find a new location. Residents who shop and eat at the businesses have mixed opinions on the proposal.
"I think its kind of sad," Debbie Drummy said. "I think we have enough condos in Carmel, and I'd kind of like to see it stay as it is."
The proposal does not include commercial space, leaving the shops and restaurants at the shopping center to find a new location.
"I think condos are important for new families coming in, but I think the businesses are important, as well," Piya Nandy said. "Some are so niche and people love having small restaurants close by."
If the developer moves forward, the developer will be required to give businesses 12 months notice to find a new place.
"We have looked at places, and the prices will double," Ingram said. "We will just have to find the best thing for us that we can find."
