INDIANAPOLIS — A local leader hopes a new playground on the northeast side of Indianapolis will show kids in the community someone cares.
The new Dee Ross Community Park at 42nd Street and North Post Road is named after the Ross Foundation leader, a man who grew up on the far northeast side.
Dee Ross says the park is a symbol of hope for the community.
"No child should grow up without a playground," Ross said. "If I can do it you can too if I can change my life around and rise above the occasion my circumstances and then be a part of revitalizing and restoring our communities that's how you really show and express your love for the community."
He hopes this will be a safe place for kids and encourage others to get involved and help make the area better.
"We have to get some morals and principles and character back into our community and say 'Hey we stand by this we stand against this but together this is what we can bring to our community,'" Ross said.
Na'Shawn Clay, who lives in the area, says it's a good thing because they grew up in a drug and gang environment.
The park is located at the Capital City Church of Christ and is a collaboration between J.D. Finish Line Youth Foundation, the Kaboom non-profit, The Ross Foundation, and the Community Alliance on the far east side.
"To create an outside environment for kids will allow kids to stay kids, even though they face stuff in their household they can come outside and find an escape," Cheria Caldwell, cafe director of community engagement, said.
Ross said the park serves as another step toward rebuilding and beautifying the area.
A full basketball court will hopefully be installed at the park and Ross said he's talking with the Pacers to hopefully make it happen.
