SPEEDWAY — A Central Indiana church is starting a new tradition to help those dealing with things like grief, depression or a family crisis during the holiday season.

For the first time, the Speedway Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) had a blue Christmas service to give people a place to come for encouragement and support.

"It's a time where a lot of people find themselves to be in a darkness as a result of a lot of different losses in their lives," Rev. Katie Griffin said.

The service serves those who attend, but also serves as a way to spread a message to those who weren't there.

"Just so that we know those people who have lost somebody know they are not alone," church elder David Shank said. "There's somebody who cares about them."

Shank says the service is a good reminder to check on people who you know are dealing with loss.

If you need it, Shank says he, and his church, are there for you.

"God is walking with you through all seasons of your life," Rev. Griffin said.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a loss this holiday season, feeling depressed, or need to talk to someone, call 211.
