BEECH GROVE — Thousands of high school students across the state advanced one step closer to their college dreams on Sunday.

College Goal Sunday, an event that began in Indiana, gives families help navigating the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, which is known as the gateway to college financial aid.

Volunteers spent time at 37 locations in Indiana to help college-bound students learn about financial aid programs.

Matt Krieg sees the FAFSA form as a tool to ease the financial burden of paying for college.

"It could make that difference between someone who may not go because they have some financial concerns or is now going because they've alleviated some of those concerns and came forward with the college process," he said.

The form doesn't have to be completed until April 15, but families had the opportunity Sunday to complete it while an expert was just steps away.

"It really does help to get it done early and check that off so you can work on other things," Krieg said. "It's a really important form that's gotta be filled out to be eligible for that type of financial aid from both the federal government and the State of Indiana."

Students and families who missed College Goal Sunday can still get professional help filling out the FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). This is a free hotline sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.
