INDIANAPOLIS — Local shelters and organizations for people experiencing homelessness say the need right now is at an all-time high.
Leaders with Wheeler Mission tell WRTV they’ve provided beds for more than 1,000 people each night for the past few days.
Between record numbers and social distancing guidelines the shelters are filling up. In order to meet the need, Wheeler Mission has teamed up with the city to provide overflow space at local hotels.
They say the community continues to support them and their work though donations as well. Wheeler Mission even saw an increase in donations through the Drumstick Dash this year. They raised more to help the homeless than they did in 2019.
They’re hoping the community support continues though, because they anticipate the need to increase in the coming weeks. "I think we can expect those numbers to rise. Typically we do not see our highest numbers at Wheeler until we are about January, so we have a couple weeks to go and I'm concerned about the capacity to meet those needs when that comes,” said Colleen Gore, Executive Vice President of Women’s Programming at Wheeler Mission.
